UMaine Men Fall in America East Opener


ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine men's basketball team fell to Binghamton in both teams' America East opener by the score of 70-62 on Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. Maine falls to 5-9 and 0-1 in conference play while Binghamton improves to 8-4 and 1-0 in America East.

Maine was led by America East Player of the Game Gerald McLemore (San Diego, Calif.) who had 16 points and two steals for the Black Bears.

Maine fell behind 14-5 early in the game, before going on a 12-2 run that gave Maine the lead with just under eight minutes to go in the half.

Binghamton took a 27-20 lead before going on an 11-7 run to take a 38-27 lead into halftime. The Bearcats shot the ball very well in the first, going 8-for-16 from deep to give them the lead.

Maine was led in the first half by Sean McNally (Gardiner, Maine) who had nine points and three rebounds.

In the second half, Maine made a charge and closed the gap to eight points early in the second half on a McLemore three-pointer.

The Bearcats were able to keep a lead though as they made 12-of-18 free throws in the second half that provided a lead that Maine could not quite overcome.

Maine continued to play tough, and went on a 9-to-1 run towards the end of the game to make it an eight point game.

Maine outrebounded Binghamton by a 36-33 margin. Binghamton shot 51 percent from the field for the game while Maine shot 37 percent.

Junior Bernal (Manhattan, N.Y.) played solid for Maine, scoring 14 points and grabbing eight rebounds while dishing out four assists.

Binghamton was led by its America East Player of the Game, D.J. Rivera, who had 24 points and six rebounds.

Maine returns to action on Thursday at Stony Brook at 7 p.m
