19th Annual All Star Soccer Tournament

One of the most exciting soccer events of the year is just around the corner. On Tuesday August 4th (rain date August 6th) beginning at 6 PM. Some of Maine’s finest 2008 high school soccer players will converge on to the fields of Westbrook High School to play in the 19th annual All Star Soccer Tournament. All proceeds from gate sales and concessions will go directly to Special Olympics Maine.

The teams will represent the Western Maine Conference and the Southern Maine Activities Association. The players were all members of their respective High School Varsity Teams in 2008 and graduated in 2009. The women’s game will begin at 6PM and the men’s game will begin at 8 PM. The All Star Committee has selected Rich Smith of Yarmouth and Michael Kennedy of Greely to coach the Western Maine Conference Women’s team. The W.M.C. Men’s team will be coached by Matt Erickson of St. Doms and Bob Hodgman-Burns of Fryeburg Academy. For the Southern Maine Activities Association the Women’s team is being coached by Rodney Brown of Noble and Chris Kohl of Thornton Academy. The Men’s team is coached by Bryan Hoy of South Portland and Jim O’Connor of Windham.

Practice for the teams will be held on Sunday August 2nd at Westbrook High School at 3PM. Each team will have their own individual practice and will receive their team uniforms at this time.

One interesting note on the games is that Coach Jim O’Connor of Windham will be coaching his own son Eric O’Connor. The WMC men and women currently have the advantage in this 18 year series, with a record of 7 wins, 4 losses and 7 ties each.

All proceeds will benefit Special Olympics Maine, a year round athletic training and competition program for persons with intellectual disabilities of all ages. In Maine there are over 2500 athletes who participate in the program. Special Olympics is a non-profit International movement.
