Enroth leads Red-Hot Pirates to 8th Straight Home Win

Jhonas Enroth made 35 saves to lead the Portland Pirates to a narrow 2-1 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 3,416 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Matt Caruana and Mark Mancari supplied the offense for the Pirates, who tied a franchise record with their eighth consecutive home victory. The feat was also accomplished by the Pirates from October 20 to November 21, 1993 and from January 15 to February 19, 2000. The win also extended the Pirates point-streak to 13 games (12-0-0-1). The Pirates, now 33-16-5-3, also used the victory to move into a tie with Worcester for first place in the Atlantic Division with 74 points.

Dustin Jeffrey netted the lone goal for the Penguins, who saw their six-game winning streak end. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is now 29-27-1-1 on the season.

After a scoreless first period, Caruana got the Pirates on the board five minutes into the second to allow Portland to carry a 1-0 advantage into the third. Mancari made it 2-0 Pirates with a power-play goal early in the third before Jeffrey struck to make for a close finish.

The Penguins out shot the Pirates 36-18 in the game.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were all from the Pirates. Enroth was the first, Mancari the second and forward Tyler Ennis the third.

The Pirates return to action tomorrow (Wednesday) night when they travel to Worcester to meet the Sharks in a 7:05 p.m. start. The game can be heard live on News Talk WLOB 95.5 and on-line on portlandpirates.com beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.

The next Pirates home game takes place Friday when the Albany River Rats visit for a 7 p.m. start. It’s Good Shepherd Food Bank Night, Student Achiever Night & Gritty's Mug Club Night.
