  • Released left-handed pitcher Brian Shouse.

They also acquired infielder Kevin Frandsen from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for a player to be named later or cash.

The announcements were made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.

Frandsen, 27, appeared in 23 games over four stints for the Giants last season, batting .140 (7-for-50) with one RBI. The right-handed hitter spent most of the 2009 campaign at Triple-A Fresno, posting a .295 (126-for-427) batting average, 13 homers and 55 RBI in 110 contests. Among qualifying Pacific Coast League batters he was the fifth-hardest to strike out, fanning once every 13.94 at-bats.

Selected by San Francisco in the 12th round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, Frandsen is a veteran of 174 Major League games over parts of four seasons with the Giants from 2006-09. He owns a .240 (98-for-408) career batting average with seven home runs and 39 RBI. He has appeared in games at second base (91), shortstop (32), left field (10), third base (9) and right field (3).
