#RedSox Re-Acquire Van Every, Option Reddick

The Boston Red Sox today acquired outfielder Jonathan Van Every from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for a player to be named later and optioned outfielder Josh Reddick to Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for Van Every on the 40-man roster, the club designated right-handed pitcher Santo Luis for assignment. Van Every will be active for tonight’s game against the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park and will wear No. 44.

The announcements were made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.

Van Every, 30, has hit .314 (11-for-35) with two doubles, two home runs, four RBI and eight runs scored in 10 games for Pittsburgh’s Triple-A Indianapolis affiliate in 2010, playing six games in center field, three in left and appearing once as a pinch-hitter. Originally selected by Cleveland in the 29th round of the 2000 First-Year Player Draft, Van Every also spent parts of two seasons in the Boston system from 2008-09 and made his Major League debut with the club in 2008. He batted .364 (4-for-11) with a home run and three RBI in seven games with the Red Sox last year and has hit .286 (8-for-28) with a triple, home run and eight RBI in 18 career Major League games overall with Boston.

Reddick, 23, was recalled on Tuesday and has made two starts in center field and appeared in three games overall, going 1-for-6 with a double and two RBI. In nine games for Triple-A Pawtucket this season, he batted .179 (7-for-39) with one homer and six RBI. Selected by the Red Sox in the 17th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, Reddick is 11-for-65 (.169) with two home runs and six RBI in 30 Major League games over parts of two seasons with Boston (2009-10).

The Red Sox claimed the 26-year-old Luis off waivers from the White Sox on April 14 and optioned him to Double-A Portland. He’s posted a 3.00 ERA (1 ER/3.0 IP) in two relief appearances with the Sea Dogs, recording three strikeouts. Luis also made two appearances for Chicago’s Double-A Birmingham club this season, going 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA (1 ER/3.0 IP) and three strikeouts.
