Maine college baseball: Colby knocks off UMF

First-year pitcher Dakota Rabbitt (Rehnoboth, Mass.) allowed just one hit over five innings to earn his first collegiate victory and Richard Newton (Arlington, Mass.) smacked a bases clearing double and was on base four times as the Colby College baseball team earned a 9-2 win over University of Maine at Farmington in the Mules’ home opener Wednesday at Coombs Field.

With the Colby Physical Plant Department working hard to get the field ready the past few days, the Mules moved to 6-7 on the season after going 5-7 in a trip to Florida.

Rabbitt struck out three and walked nine while allowing no earned runs. Abhi Chandel (Columbus, N.J.), Mark Nelson (Walpole, Mass.), and Greg Ladd (Danvers, Mass.) worked the final four innings for Colby.

Newton had two hits and two walks in his leadoff spot. His big double in the fifth inning put the Colby lead to 8-2 at that point after the Beavers had scored two in the top of the frame.

Colby’s Robb Arndt (Yarmouth, Maine) was on base all four times with two hits, a walk, and was hit by a pitch. Nate Ellis (Belmont, Mass.), who is off to a good start in his first year with the Mules, added two hits and a walk.

Alex Goldrup (Waldoboro, Maine) had a double among his two hits and scored a run for UMF (0-8). Connor McNeill (Portland, Maine) had one hit and added a sacrifice fly to drive in another. Dale Winchenbach (Waldoboro, Maine) also had a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
