Baseball: Colby blanks Thomas

Four Colby College pitchers allowed just seven hits --- all singles – and three Mule hitters had two hits apiece in a 4-0 non-conference win over local rival Thomas College on Wednesday at Coombs Field.

The Mules improve to 11-17 overall, while Thomas falls to 12-24.

Dakota Rabbitt lowered his team-best earned run average to 1.31 and is now 2-1 on the season for Colby. Abhi Chandel brought his earned run average down to 2.59 after pitching three innings, while Brady Hesslein and Mark Nelson both pitched one inning.

Bejay Perkins started for Thomas and allowed three earned runs in five innings. James McLamb went the last three innings for the Terriers and gave up no runs.

The Mules put up three runs in the first inning after Richard Newton led off with a single and moved to third base on a double by Nikolas Atsalis. Brendan Gallagher followed with a sacrifice fly to score Newton and then Atsalis stole third base. After a walk to Robb Arndt, Colin Cummings brought Atsalis in with the second sacrifice fly of the inning. Taro Gold singled and reached second base on an outfielder error, while Arndt was able to come all the way around from first base to score.

Newton had his second run of the game in the fifth inning after being hit by a pitch while leading off. He stole second base, moved to third on a groundout, and then scored on a wild pitch. Newton moved his team-best batting average to .392 and he is up to 31 runs on the season.

Newton, Atsalis, and Brandon Nieuw all had two hits for Colby. Jeff Richardson finished with a pair of hits for the Terriers.
