Baseball:Trinity takes rubber match with Bates

Andrew Janiga threw a nine-inning, complete-game four-hitter to carry Trinity College past the Bates College baseball team on Sunday, 3-1. The Bantams (15-14, 5-4 NESCAC East) won two out of three in the teams' three-game series, dropping Bates to 11-14 overall and 2-7 in the division. The game was originally scheduled to be played yesterday as the second game of a doubleheader.

Janiga limited the Bobcats to one run on four hits and three walks, stirking out five to rise to 4-3 on the season with his second complete game.

The Bantams banged out nine hits over five innings against Bates junior starting pitcher Karl Alexander, scoring three runs, two earned. First-year lefthander Tom Baroni pitched the final four innings, holding Trinity scoreless from the sixth through the eighth inning, until the Bantams added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on Michael Rueger's double and Mark Young's RBI single.

Trinity scored single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead. Young scored the Bantams' first run, hitting a one-out single and then scoring on a two-base error by the Bobcats. Trinity mounted a two-out rally in the fourth, with David Casanova singling and then scoring on Luke Auger's double down the left-field line. Trinity made it 3-0 in the top of the fifth on consecutive doubles hit by Joe Papa and Kevin Mortimer.

Bates got its run in the bottom of the fifth. Rich Velotta singled to left, got to second on a groundout and made it to third on a wild pitch. Pat Murphy then drove a triple into the gap in right center to score Velotta. The Bobcats left two runners on base in the inning, however, and Janiga allowed only two Bates hitters to reach base over the final four innings: a leadoff walk by Gordy Webb in the seventh and Noah Lynd's one-out single in the ninth.

Young led Trinity by going 3-for-5, while Papa, Casanova and Auger all had two hits apiece. Lynd, Velotta, Murphy and junior Mike Ciummei (Acton, Mass.) came up with Bates' four hits in the game.

Bates' next games are a home doubleheader against UMaine-Farmington, scheduled for Tuesday at 2 p.m.
