Softball: Colby gets sweep over Maine Maritime

Alyssa Lepore (Victor, N.Y.) had her 100th career hit and Aimee Polimeno (North Woodstock, N.H.) won her first collegiate game in leading the Colby College softball team to a 3-2 win over Maine Maritime Academy in the opening contest of a doubleheader on Tuesday at Crafts Field.

Lauren Becker (Falls Church, Va.) tossed a three-hit shutout and went 2-for-2 on the day in some rare batting appearances as the Mules won 1-0 in the nightcap.

Lepore has 101 hits after getting one hit in each game. She was an All-New England Small College Athletic Conference First Team All-Star a year ago.

Colby (5-10 overall) scored two runs in the third inning of the first game. Alanna Sanborn (Eliot, Maine) reached second base on an error to lead off the frame. After an out, Kelsey Yardumian (Boxborough, Maine) walked to put runners on first and second. Barbara Santos (Topsfield, Mass.), who went 3-for-3 in the game, drove in Sanborn from second base with a single for the first run of the game. Lepore then followed with her milestone hit and drove in Yardumian with the second run.

Maine Maritime tied the game in the fourth inning with solo home runs from Leah Jackson (Dedham, Maine) and McKenzie Burke (Wells, Maine). Jackson led off the inning with her seventh home run of the season and Burke tied the game with a one-out blast.

Colby received the game-winning run in the fifth inning when Katie Graichen (Arundel, Maine) led off with single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Yardumian singled to put Graichen at third base and Santos followed with a big RBI single.

Polimeno allowed seven hits and struck out three for her first victory.

In the second game, Becker struck out eight and did not give up a hit until the fourth inning.

Graichen scored the only run of the game after she singled and later scored when Lepore reached on a fielder’s choice.

Erica Taylor allowed seven hits and pitched a complete game in picking up the tough-luck loss for MMA (10-5).
