Softball: UMF Sweeps UMPI

After the Beavers rolled 10-1 in the opener, Meaghan Donnell (Rochester, N.H.) and Casey Mull (Portland, Maine) each smacked an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally the University of Maine at Farmington to an 8-7 win in game two for a sweep of the University of Maine at Presque Isle in non-conference softball action today.

The games were moved to Kents Hill School due to unplayable field conditions in Farmington.

The Beavers (5-7) are scheduled to host Husson University in North Atlantic Conference competition Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. The Owls (8-9) are tabbed to take on Vermont Tech Saturday in Vermont.

In game two, Farmington fell behind 5-0 after the Owls' first at-bat, but bounced back with Donnell and Mull's run-scoring hits in the seventh to snatch an 8-7 victory.

After two innings, UMPI held to a 7-5 edge before Liz Sargent (Trenton, Maine) clubbed her first collegiate home run in the sixth to get the Beavers to within a run at 7-6 in the sixth. With two outs in the seventh and runners on first and third, Donnell singled to drive in Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, N.H.) to tie the game at 7-7. Mull followed with a base hit scoring Sam Morency (Lewiston, Maine) to lead Farmington to the 8-7 win.

Mull finished with a pair of singles for Farmington, while Mitchell added a triple.

Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine) overcame the opening inning to earn the mound win with 11 hits allowed, three walks and two strikeouts in the complete game.

Brittany Humphrey (New Gloucester, Maine) singled, doubled and plated two runs for UMPI, while Krista Coffin (Presque Isle, Maine) and Kathleen Higgins (Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia) each singled twice with Higgins knocking in two runs.

Coffin took the loss for the Owls with seven hits allowed, four walks and three strikeouts.

In the first game, Farmington pushed across 10 runs over the first three innings to roll to the 10-1 win in five innings due to the mercy rule.

The Beavers blew the game open in the third when a fly ball by Amy Jones (Augusta, Maine) with the bases loaded was dropped after a collision in the outfield, allowing all four runs to come around to score. Mitchell capped the frame with a solo blast to give Farmington a 10-1 lead.

Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine) rapped a single and a triple with two RBI, while Donnell singled and doubled and Mull singled twice.

Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine) tossed a three-hitter for the victory with one free pass and six punchouts.

Lainey Herring (Houlton, Maine) collected two singles in the loss.

Coffin threw 2.1 innings in the loss with five hits given up, five walks and three strikeouts. Only one of the eight runs charged to Coffin was earned.
