Norfolk VA- At the recent 2011 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national convention, Southern Maine Community College’s Director of Athletics and Men’s Basketball Coach Matt Richards (pictured above) was named USCAA Board of Directors President. The appointment came during the annual business meeting of convention attendees.
“The USCAA national office is excited to have Mr. Richards assume the role as President of the association”, states USCAA Chief Operating Officer Matthew Simms. “Mr. Richards has been an integral part of both the association’s external growth in members, as well as the increase in operating budget that has allowed us to hire new workers and improve our member service and relations. His experience and vigor will provide an excellent platform for continued success.”
Richards had just completed a four year term as the Vice President of Marketing and Eligibility Chair on the USCAA Board of Directors. During that time, Richards assisted with marketing directives that included membership drive that saw a rise in membership of the USCAA from 42 to 82 institutions, solicitation of national sponsors, and overseeing national eligibility.
As President of the Board of Directors for the USCAA, Richard’s role will change to include chairing the Board of Directors meetings, presiding over the business meeting during the USCAA convention, represent the USCAA at any national athletic or educational meetings, develop reports, and work closely with the USCAA national office staff on daily operations of the organization.
“I feel this is such a great opportunity for me professionally and personally. To work on a national level continuing the efforts to promote small college athletics has become something that I’m very passionate about. I see the USCAA continuing its amazing growth of providing opportunities to institutions across the country and I’m happy to serve the membership as President of the Board of Directors", stated Richards.
The USCAA is a national organization that exists to provide quality athletic competition on a regional and national level. The USCAA focuses specifically on smaller institutions of higher learning and their student-athletes. The association believes that all athletes and programs deserve the same national opportunities as larger institutions. The USCAA is an organization that can provide those opportunities.
