SATURDAY MORNING QUICK HITTERS

- The Portland Pirates dropped a hard fought game to the Providence Bruins Friday night 2 - 1. Despite being outshot 40 - 28, Pirates Goalie Jhonas Enroth kept them in the game. The Series is tied 1 - 1 and Game 3 is at the CX4 Sunday at 4PM. Go to Portland Pirates.com for ticket information.
- The Portland Sea Dogs beat up on the Binghamton Mets tonight 8 - 4. Lars Anderson hit his 1st HR of the season.
- The University of Maine Baseball and Softball Teams are hosting double headers at Orono tomorrow! Visit GoBlackBears.com for details.
- The Boston Red Sox, down 7 - 0 to Baltimore at one point, stormed back to beat the Orioles 10 - 8. The Red Sox bullpen pitched 6 innings of shutout ball after Brad Penny gave up 8 earned runs in 3 innings of work.
- The Red Sox sent Jed Lowrie to an expert to look at his ailing wrist. Lowrie may have season ending surgery.
- ESPN is reportand that Hobey Baker award winner and NCCA Hockey National Champion Matt Gilroy has signed a 2 year deal with the New York Rangers. Gilroy was the top defenseman on the Champion Boston University Terriers.

- The Maine Black Bears Baseball team wrapped up a solid weekend blasting Iona 4 straight. Brewer's Kevin McAvoy collected his 200th hit in today's 11 - 0 win.
- The Portland Pirates made 1 more big leap forward by beating the Springfield Falcons 6 - 4 at the CX4 Sunday afternoon. Mathieu Darche had 2 goals for the Pirates in the win. The Pirates are now in 3rd Place with a 1 point lead over the Worcester Sharks and a 4 point lead over the Mancester Monarchs. The Pirates play both teams in this final week of play. The Pirates return home Friday to play fierce rival Providence Bruins.

Monday Morning Quick Hitters
PHOTO COURTESY BANGOR DAILY NEWSThe Maine Black Bears Baseball Team Split 2 double headers against Sacred Heart over the weekend, losing 2 on Saturday and winning 2 on Sunday. Maine is 12 - 9 on the season and in 1st place in America East. No one has played any conference games yet.
The Maine Black Bears Softball team had a fantastic weekend winning 3 games. On Saturday, Maine beat Boston College 5 - 4. They had an even better day on Sunday, sweeping both games against Bryant.
The Portland Pirates dropped their 3rd straight game, losing to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 4 - 3 Sunday. The loss drops the Pirates to 4th place in the Atlantic Division.
The Lewiston MAINEiacs head back home down 2 - 0 against the Drummondville Voltigeurs in the QMJHL Playoffs. Game 3 is tomorrow at the Collisee.

Thursday Morning Quick Hitters

The Black Bear Softball team split 2 games today, beating Sacred Heart 1 - 0 and lost SIU Edwardsville 3 - 2 to break the winning streak at 10 games.

A very shorthanded Boston Celtics put up a valiant fight against the Miami Heat, finally losing 107 - 99. Leon Powe played almost 43 minutes and scored 23 points.
Boston University fired it's Men's Basketball coach, Dennis Wolff, after 15 seasons with the team. BU lost in the 1st Round of the America East playoffs 79 - 75 to UMBC in overtime.

The Black Bears Softball team runs its winning streak to 9 games by winning 2 games on Tuesday. The Black Bears beat Penn in the opener 6 - 4 and Bryant 10 - 4 in the afternoon game.
The Portland Pirates missed a chance to gain some playoff ground, losing to the Binghamton Senators 3 -1 on a rare Tuesday night tilt.
In World Baseball Classic news, The Netherlands beat the Dominican Republic 2 - 1 in 11 innings Tuesday. Former Maine Black Black Bear Curt Smith moved the tying run to third and Eugene Kingsale atoned for his error in the top of the 11th by singling in the trying run and scoring the winning run.
The Boston Bruins offense takes leave yet again, losing to the Columbus Blue Jackets 2 - 0 in Columbus.
Mike Lowell got back into the swing of things for the Sox yesterday with no problems reported. Clay Buchholz has a good couple of innings in the 5 - 1 loss to Baltimore.
The New England Patriots secondary is going to look very different in 2009 as they signed Leigh Bodden to a contract on Tuesday.

Monday Morning Quick Hitters
The Lewiston MAINEiacs dropped another hard fought game to the Shawinigan Cataractes 4 - 2 Sunday at the Colisee.
The University of Maine Softball team swept a pair of games on Sunday, beating Youngstown State 12 - 5 in the day game and Yale 4 - 3 in the nightcap!
The Maine Black Bears Men's Hockey team has an opponent for round 1 of the Hockey East playoffs and it is the Boston University Terriers. BU will host the best of 3 series starting Friday night at Agganis Arena in Boston.
The Walking Wounded continues for the Boston Celtics as Big Baby goes down with an ankle sprain in a 86 - 79 loss to the Orlando Magic Sunday at the Garden. In addition to Big Baby Davis going down during the game, The Celts were without Rajon Rondo, KG, Scal and Tony Allen.
The road has not been kind to the Boston Bruins the last few days. Manny Fernandez may have played the poorest game by a Boston goaltender Sunday, as the Bruins drop a rough and tumble game against the Rangers 4 - 3.
Kevin Youkilis hit his 2nd home run of the WBC as the USA handled Venezuela 15 - 6.
Yahoo Sports is reporting Jon Lester signed a 5 year extension, the team is denying any such deal has been struck.
