Cheverus' Peter Gwilym wins Maine's Fitzpatrick Award

PETER GWILYM (ON RIGHT) WINS FITZY

On Sunday, Cheverus High School's Peter Gwilym was awarded the 40th annual James J. Fitzpatrick Trophy as the top high school senior football player in the State of Maine.

The Senior led his Cheverus Stags to a 46-8 State Championship Game win over the Bangor Rams in November, to help cap off a perfect 12-0 season. Gwilym was also named Maine's Gatorade High School Player of the Year in December.

Gwilym was going up against QB Cam Kaubris of Mountain Valley and QB Jamie Ross of Deering for the Fitzy.

Passing: 52 - 88 passing completions, 763 yards passing, 9 passing touchdowns
Rushing: 120 attempts, 705 rushing yards, 13 rushing touchdowns
Defense: 81 unassisted tackles, 5 INTs, three forced fumbles

After Cheverus hung on to beat Deering 35-34 on Saturday afternoon at Boulos Stadium, the usually stone-face of Cheverus Head Coach John Wolfgram actually had a smile on it when asked about Peter Gwilym's decision to return an interception out of the end zone in the first half.

"That's Peter Gwilym decision," said Wolfgram, smiling. "I would have preferred he stayed in (the end zone), but I think he made the right call."

Gwilym's 109 yard interception return for touchdown (that's not a misprint) in the first half was almost a footnote as Deering erased a 29-6 Cheverus to take a 34-29 lead late in the fourth quarter. Deering's Jamie Ross was a one-man offensive wrecking crew, finishing with a final line 26-for-50, 372 yards, with three touchdowns and three interceptions in the air, and adding 18 carries for 93 yards with two touchdowns on the ground. Two of the interceptions happend inside the Cheverus 20 yard line, killing scoring chances that turned out to be crucial in the final margin. Ross also just barely missed a 36 yard field goal with just under a second left that would have given Deering the win. It went wide left.

Deering actually outgained Cheverus 501-317, but 5 turnovers were the difference in thsi one.

Afterwards, as Coach Wolfgram answered a question about comparing the feeling of this game to the feeling after last year's Western A Final (a loss in miserable weather in Windham), he paused for a moment as his wife and granddaughter came up to congratulate him.

"This," he said, "feels much better."

Notes: Gwilym had 58 yards rushing and completed 6 of 9 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown through the air (in addition to his interception return)

Bonny Eagle 32 - South Portland 0
Bonny Eagle was prepared as ever to play the Red Riots of South Portland. South Portland has been somewhat of a thorn in the Scots side of late, but not this night. While Bonny Eagle's Spread Offense gets all the press, the Bonny Eagle Defense is what turns most heads.

South Portland entered the Bonny Eagle Red Zone 4 times, and each time came away with zero points. 3 turn over on downs and 1 fumble was all the Red Riots could muster when in scoring range.

Bonny Eagle got a 30 yrd TD play from Cam Cooper and RB's Ethan Thorne and Nick Adkins got TD runs of 30 plus yards to put South Portland away.

I asked Coack Kevin Cooper about his defense and it's lack of recognition from the media.

Deering 56 Thornton Academy 18 
Thornton Academy kept it close for most of the 1st half, even tying the game at 14 - 14 with a little over 5 minutes left. At that point, everything fell apart for TA.

The Golden Trojans fumbled 3 times in the final 5 minutes and Deering capitalized on, makeing a 14 - 14 game, 28 - 14 before the half.

A scary moment, as TA WR James Ek was carted off after landing hard on a leaping attempt. Ek was transported to the hospital, but was released and is OK.

Deering finished off TA 56 - 18.

Scarborough 49 Biddeford 14
Scarborough had never played a Class A playoff game, sure didn't look like it Saturday at Waterhouse field in Biddeford.

Scarborough put Biddeford on their heels right from the start as Dennis Liu returned the opening kickoff 90 yards, and they never looked back.

Biddeford looked out of sync all day, losing key players to suspensions for violations of team rules.

Scarborough got great play from QB Jack Adams and RB's Scott Thibeault (two touchdowns) and Mark Pearson.

#1 Lawrence vs #8 Brunswick 7PM @Fairfield
Jeff - Lawrence is just too tough a team both on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Lawrence has allowed less than 100 2nd half yards TOTAL in the last 2 games combine. With Shaun Carroll, Spencer Carey and Blair Blaisdell running with power and finesse, Lawrence should control from the start. Lawrence 32 - 16

Matty- Lawrence best team in the state. Period. They win 33-6.

Final Score: Brunswick 14 Lawrence 13

#4 Lewiston vs #5 Messalonskee 7PM @Lewiston
Jeff - Haven't seen either team play, but from reports, 2 teams evenly matched. Lewiston dropped a turnover laden game to EL last week, while Messalonskee was held to 35 yrds in the 2nd half against Lawrence in a 19 - 6 loss. two teams looking to make a mark, but Lewiston rebounds 29 - 13.

Matty- Lewiston played a terrible football game against their rival last week. I can see that spilling over into this week in a game where they are pretty evenly matched. Messalonskee did hold Lawrence to 19 points earlier this year, so I'll take the road team. Messalonskee 23 Lewiston 15

#3 Cony vs # 6 Mt. Blue 7PM @Cony
Jeff - Luke Dunklee..nuff said for Cony. He has scored 24 TD and has over 1000 yards passing and 1000 yards rushing this season. Mt Blue counters with a deep receiving corps with Jordan Whitney at the helm, so the Cougars can match point for point. Mt. Blue won the 1st meeting this season 27 - 19, but I think Cony has grown more since that game. Cony 34 - 27

Matty- Cony finally living up to the pre-season hype, and is looking to avenge early season loss. They will. 28 -16.

#2 Bangor vs #7 Edward Little 7PM @Bangor

Jeff - Bangor got Josiah Hartley back last week, but QB/DB Joe Seccareccia aggravated a shoulder injury. All indications are that Joe will play, but at what capacity. EL is on a 4 game tear including a stunning 26 - 7 dominating win over Lewiston. Teven Conlon rushed for over 175 yards against lewiston, expect more of the same against Bangor. Here is my upset special, EL catches Bangor at the right time, Edward Little 27-20

Matty- Letdown game for EL here, as I think their season was made last week with a win over the arch rivals. Dave Sterling has done an excellent job in rough circumstances, but Bangor is too deep to fall here, so Bangor 26 EL 13.

#1 Cheverus vs #8 Windham 12:30PM Saturday @Cheverus
Jeff - Rumors abound Cheverus will be without key pieces due to suspensions for breaking team rules. If true, Cheverus vaunted attack on offense and defense will be tested. Windham enters a very different team than they started with. Windham QB Cody Laberge has grown as the season went along, but not sure enough to overcome Cheverus. Peter Gwilym, Spencer Cooke and Evan Jendresko provide unmatched 2 way play for Cheverus, see Cheverus in a blow out 45-17

Matty- A rematch of last year's Western A Final, which was played in horrible rainy conditions. Windham found their stride midway through the season, much like they did in 2008 when they lost to Thornton in the Western semi's. Not sure how badly suspensions will hurt Cheverus, but if any key pieces are missing, Windham has enough to keep it close. Matt Perkins will not hesitate to take risks against John Wolfgram's Stags, knowing he really has nothing to lose. Cheverus 21 Windham 19

#4 Biddeford vs #5 Scarborough 1PM Saturday @Biddeford
Jeff - Biddeford has had some big wins along the way, but maybe none bigger than the 27-22 win over TA in front of over 4000 people at Waterhouse Field. Scarborough boasts a solid offense lead by Sr QB Jack Adams. Adams was huge in the early season 21 -9 thrashing of Biddeford. The Tigers are another team hurt by suspensions, most notably QB Tyler Audie. Nick Leblonde gets the nod in Audie's absence. I don't believe Biddeford can overcome the loss of key players, Scarborough 23-16

Matty- Not much to add here, Scarborough rolls over short-handed Biddeford 27-13.

#3 Deering vs # 6 Thornton Academy 7PM @Deering
Jeff - TA has been on a downward trend the last few weeks while Deering, even in losses, seems to improve their overall game. Deerings QB Jamie Ross should lead his team to a big victory again this year, Deering 36-19.

Matty- Thornton due for a big win, and from what I saw from Deering last week, this is a good spot for them to get it. Thornton 38 Deering 35.

#2 Bonny Eagle vs #7 South Portland 7PM @Bonny Eagle
Jeff - South Portland needed a win to get in last week. Joey DiBiase and company ran roughshot over Portland to make the #7 seed. Things might have not worked out better for South Portland, as they face a team that they are all to familiar with, Bonny Eagle. over the last 2 seasons, South Portland seems to match up nicely with Bonny Eagle. This season it took a last second TD for Bonny Eagle to beat SP, and last season, SP broke the Scots 15 game winning streak. Not sure SP can pull off another miracle, as Bonny Eagle's defense is unheralded and very talented. Bonny Eagle 35-27

Matty- Bonny Eagle seems to have re-focused since their loss to Cheverus, and although it won't please the constituents in District 7, the Scots win here over Schoolsy's alma mater, 36-24.

Regular Season Sports Day Dream

Rarely does one encounter a day of this magnitude in the regular season in Maine High School Football. Sure, a Nor' Easter helped matters dramatically, but to have a day where #2 Cheverus took on #4 Bonny Eagle in the West and #1 Bangor took on #3 Lawrence in the East, well that's just something the sports gods cooked up.

Better still, the Bonny Eagle/Cheverus tilt went off at 12:30 and a mere 1 hour 30 minute drive away, Lawrence/Bangor kicked off at 7PM in Fairfield.

The day started with me sitting at a microphone on 96.3 The Big Jab, yapping about sports on the Weekend Warm Up (Presented By Mr Sparky America's On Time Electrician). See how I did that? Pretty slick. So I was able to start my sports day by talking sports of all kinds with my pal and partner in crime Matty for 3 hours prior to kickoff. So yeah, my Saturday of Maine sports did not suck.

So after a great show, if I do say so myself, I chugged on over to Cheverus, flashed my "Media Credentials", and got an insanely great parking spot. Perks you know, gotta take advantage once in a while. Anyway, met up with my pal Tom from MBR.ORG and Coach Rob Munzing, who by coincidence, will be the color guy on our High School Football Championship presented by Messer Truck Equipment November

Mount Blue (3-1) at Bangor (4-0) Friday 7:00pm PPD til Saturday 1PM
Mt Blue tries to bring Bangor down a peg, but with Bangor's offense, that will be easier said than done. Joe Seccareccia and Josiah Hartley bring a deadly accurate challenge to any defense. Mt Blue's offense is no slouch either. Quarterback Jordan Whitney's weapons Cam Sennick and A.J. Larrabee will keep the Bangor defense on their toes. This could be a shootout!

How good is Deering? This will be answered Saturday at Dr Paul Hill Stadium. Deering's Jamie Ross has only really been stopped by powerhouse Bonny Eagle, this is a must win for Deering if they are to be considered an elite team in the West. On the other side, Coach Kevin Kezal has his team humming on all cylinders. TA's deadly mix of smashmouth offense and tough nosed defensive is a hard road for any team. This should be a good one.

Both Wells and Falmouth lost to the teams ahead of them, Mt Valley and Cape, but this game looks to be a good one. Falmouth and it's offense should be tested by Wells and it's strong defense. This will be a test of who is the best of the rest in Class B West.

Thursday Night High School Football Thunder

We usually have to wait until Friday to get things going, but Week 3 of the High School Football Schedule gets going tonight, and a couple games are doozies.

Biddeford Tigers (2-0) at Kennebunk Rams (0-2) 7PM

Joe Rafferty's Rams will have another tough road as they host the Biddeford Tigers tonight. Biddeford, lead by RB Nick Gagne, scored all 3 TD's for the Tigers in their 21-14 win over Massabesic last week, should have little trouble with Kennebunk. Tigers QB Tyler Audie also poses a threat with his ability to run a pass. The Rams are a hard nosed group, shown by shutting out Noble last week, but just don't match up depth wise with Biddeford.

Westbrook Blue Blazes (0-2) at Portland Bulldogs (0-2) 7PM

Westbook is fresh of a 34-22 loss to South Portland, but opened many eyes. Westbrook was not expected to give South Portland much of a game, but took a 22-21 lead late in the 3rd. Westbrook's Manny Vincent was a one man wrecking crew, running for 130 plus yards with a TD on offense and returned a 40 yard interception for another score on defense. South Portland's QB Tommy Ellis took over the rest of the way to hand Westbrook the loss. Portland's 0-2 is much more of a mystery as SR Imadhi Zagon was supposed to lead his troops toward a playoff birth. A week 1 tough loss to Deering and a trouncing by Bonny Eagle leaves Portland wondering what kind of team they have. if Westbrook plays the way they did against South Portland, portland will be looking down the barrel of an 0-3 start.

Sanford Redskins (2-0) at Scarborough Red Storm (1-1) 7PM 

The Scarborough Red Storm were thought to be ready for the next step this season, and all plans seemed to be in motion after a gritty 33-29 win over Massabesic in the opener. Last weeks 33-7 drubbing by powerhouse Thornton Academy may allow questions to creep in. Turnovers were the name of the game for the Red Storm as 2 big fumbles and an interception in the Red Zone squashed any thoughts of of a comeback. The Redskins are panning out quite nicely thank you. SR RB Shawn Goodrich (236 yrds in 1st 2 games) has this offense running like a charm. With Sanford blasting it's way to a playoff birth and Scarborough looking to right the ship, this could be the game of the night.

Ross and his crew "upset" Portland on opening day, so they are staring at going 3-0 to start the season. Standing in the way is a stout Bonny Eagle team. Scots coach Kevin Cooper has his team running on all cylinders with a combined 91 points for and 20 against in the 1st 2 games of the season. The offense lead by SR QB Matt Rollins, seems poised to take the Scots on another Championship run. They were a Windham Eagles miracle 2 point conversion from maing a run last year, possibly giving them the focus and push needed to regain the crown this year.

High School Football Class B West: Cape Blanks Poland 25-0

POLAND'S CONRAD LABBE TRIES TO GET SOME YARDS AGAINST CAPE (PHOTO JEFF SCHOOLS)

FOR PHOTO GALLERY CLICK HERE - Cape Elizabeth took advantage of their depth and Poland mistakes for a 25-0 win over the Knights in Poland. It was the opening game for both teams, and Cape cashed in an early fumble recovery on the Poland 18 yard line for a Derek Roberts rushing touchdown that put them up 7-0.

Poland's defense then stiffened, keeping Cape out of the endzone until there was 25 seconds left in the first half. After a questionable offensive call on 4th and 5 for Poland, Cape took advantage of the short field, getting a 9 yard touchdown run by Roberts to put them up 13-0.

After a scoreless 3rd, Cape's Jack Barber rumbled into  the end zone from 32 yards out to make it 19-0, and the scoring ended a few minutes later when Roberts threw a beautiful jump-ball to Kyle Danielson, who out-manned Poland's Christian Hanscom in the end zone to come down with a 13 yard touchdown pass, giving us the final tally of 25-0. Matty caught up with Capers' head Coach Aaron Filieo after the game, and you can listen to the audio below.

Red Sox:
Manny Ramirez was singing a different a tune and was very apologetic to how things ended with the Red Sox, and said, wait for Matty, wait for it.. That he would have returned to  Boston if he was picked up on a waiver claim. I don't think Theo would have done that Manny, sorry. Furthermore, I don't think this will be getting #24 retired in Boston.

Manny's return part 2 will have to wait till tomorrow where you will double the Manny, twice the drama and twice the fun.

Jack Mallis 2009 Fitzy Award Winner

Congratulations to Jack Mallis for finishing off a storied season for the Windham Eagles as he captures the 2009 Fitzpatrick Award for Outstanding Football Player in the State of Maine.

Times will be announced soon. 5th seeded Cheverus will travel to Thornton Academy in what may be Thornton's toughest game to date. 3rd-seeded defending state champs Bonny Eagle came from behind to beat Portland 25-19, and now gets rewarded with a trip to face 2nd seeded Windham, who shut them out 14-0 recently. Radio Broadcast Team for Maine State High School Football Championships Announced

Alex Reed and Rob Munzing will be providing the play-by-play and color analysis for the Maine State High School Football Championship game radio broadcast on November 21st, MBR.org and CMSB Media have announced. Matt Boutwell, who is the co-host and producer of "The Big Jab Weekend Warm-Up" on 96.3 FM, Sports Editor for Independent Publishing, and the publisher for CMSB Media, will be the sideline reporter.

Alex Reed is currently in his third season as Play by Play Voice of the Lewiston MAINEiacs. He is a 2005 graduate of Marshall University, where he also earned Master’s Degree in Public Relations in 2007.

While at Marshall, he provided play-by-play coverage of Thundering Herd football for 4 seasons, As well as baseball, softball, and basketball at WMUL-FM. Reed is a native of Virginia Beach, but moved to Maine in the fall of 2007. He currently resides in Lewiston. .

Rob Munzing is a 1975 graduate of the University of Maine where he lettered in baseball and football. He began his coaching career at Gardiner High School under the mentorship of John Wolfgram. When Coach Wolfgram left to assume the head coaching duties at South Portland, Rob began a 14 year career at the helm of the Gardiner Tigers. He led his Tigers to Eastern Maine Championships in 1991,1997 and 1998.

He retired from coaching after the 1999 season to follow the college football careers of his three sons. His son, Nate, is currently an assistant coach at Bates College.

Rob has been active in producing and broadcasting sports for Time Warner Cable. He currently produces a package of games featuring Gardiner Tiger football and basketball for rebroadcast on Time Warner Cable. In addition , he has been part of the Time Warner broadcast of the Maine Shrine Lobster.

Rob lives in Gardiner and is the Safety and Wellness Director for EJPrescott, Inc in Gardiner
