Big East Preview, Week 6

It’s finally time for some conference games. Some good match-ups to kick things off. This is an opportunity for Syracuse and Connecticut to have early success on the road, and jump up the standings. It’s also a week for Pitt to have a possible shock win. Can it happen? To the picks!!!

Last Week: 4-1
Overall: 27-6

Bye week: None

Miami (OH) at Cincinnati: The Bearcats seemed to find an identity last time out. Granted, it was a loss, but it was a respectable loss to Oklahoma. They actually should have won. Mistakes do continue to haunt them. Cincinnati now hosts a Miami team best known for a near win over Florida in week one. The Bearcats should have plenty of offensive success, especially with more balance. The run game has come back, and look for Zach Collaros to start putting up big rush and pass numbers. Cincy also has an opportunity to work on the defense. The RedHawks are not very scary, and make even more mistakes than the Bearcats. Butch Jones will get his boys on track early in this one.

Prediction: 36-13 Cincinnati

UNLV at West Virginia: This should be a comfortable win with or without Noel Devine. The senior tailback may be out due to an injury he picked up against LSU. However, the Rebels are pretty terrible. They are allowing over 30 points a game, so look for the Mountaineers to attack early and often. Geno Smith will look to regain his early season form, and will have plenty of opportunities if Noel sits. The Mountaineer defense should continue to improve. Look for the pass rush to haunt UNLV all day. The Rebels rarely go east, and when they do it’s usually pretty ugly. Mountaineers roll.

Prediction: 41-14 West Virginia

Memphis at Louisville: The Cardinals have an opportunity to win two games in a row. That may not sound that impressive, but this would be a huge step for Charlie Strong’s team. Louisville will look to build on a solid offensive performance from last week. Adam Froman and Bilal Powell combined for over 450 yards, and will lead the attack against a dreadful Memphis defense. The Tigers statistically have one of the worst defenses in the land and will surely slip early. If Memphis can’t keep it close, then Louisville will cruise. However, the Cardinals need to play better defensively. Last week Louisville nearly gave away a 24-point lead. It may not matter against the dregs of society, but conference teams will bite them. Look for the Cardinals to dominate early, and really force Memphis take too many chances. This game should be over by the 3rd quarter.

Prediction: 38-20 Louisville

UConn at Rutgers: Talk about two teams going in very different directions. On one hand you have the Huskies. This is a team that has been soaring with Cody Endres running the offense. The ground game continues to shine, and now pas or two may actually be completed. The defense is playing better, and it seems that normalcy may be back in Storrs. Then you have Rutgers. Here’s a team with one of the best defenses in the nation, but couldn’t find the endzone even if it was on the Jersey Shore. The Knights offense is abysmal, with no help in sight. Look for UConn to stack the box, and send pressure all game long. It’s what everyone else is doing and it seems to work. Offensively, the Huskies will try to control the clock as much as possible. Don’t expect a ton of success against this stingy Rutgers’ defense. The problem for the Knights though is that a few successful drives will probably be enough for the Huskies to prevail.

Prediction: 21-13 Connecticut

Syracuse at South Florida: It’s been some time since Syracuse faced an FBS opponent, but credit them for easily handling the FCS opposition. Now the Orange head down to Tampa to face a stingy defense, but an offense that’s missing its wings. South Florida has been winning games, but it hasn’t been impressive. The Bulls will have to go to the air to beat Syracuse. The Orange defense will certainly be stacking the box. South Florida should have some luck based on sheer athleticism, but don’t expect them to run away with it, especially if they continue to turn the ball over. The Orange will look to maintain its balance on offense. Delone Carter has run well, and Ryan Nassib has been a pleasant surprise. The issue wasn’t the arm of Nassib, but the decision-making. Nassib has been very impressive with the football, and will have to be against this defense. This should be a close game throughout. Look for USF to escape relying on their defense, and the loud crowd. The Orange seem to be improving, but may not be ready to win this type of game.

Prediction: 23-20 USF

Game of the Week: Pittsburgh at Notre Dame: This doesn’t seem to be a great match-up for Pittsburgh. The Panthers are soft in the secondary and the Irish love to throw the football. Pitt can’t throw the ball and Notre Dame can stop the run. So, why is this the game of the week? Because it’ Notre Dame, and they tend to always play close games…and this should be no different. Look for the Panthers’ defense to play aggressively and try to force Dayne Crist into low percentage passes. Crist is liable to make a mistake or two. And look for Tino Sunseri to potentially have a decent day. The good thing for Sunseri is that receivers will be open. The Irish secondary resembles the New England Patriots. This may open up the rushing attack for Dion Lewis and Ray Graham. If all of these things happen then Pitt can win. Sadly for them it probably won’t. Brian Kelly knows this Pitt defense and will look to exploit it just as he did last year. Also look for the Irish to mix up their pass rush to confuse Sunseri, which shouldn’t be too difficult. Pitt probably keeps it close, but won’t keep up all night.

Prediction: 31-21 Notre Dame

Big East Rankings V. 5.0

1. West Virginia (3-1): Hopefully spent the bye week looking for a new offensive line. Next Step…Home against UNLV.

2. Syracuse (3-1): It’s a hesitant number two, but they don’t have a bad loss yet. Next Step…Huge roadie at South Florida.

3. South Florida (3-1): The wins haven’t been impressive, but they have been wins. Next Step…Hosting Syracuse.

4. Connecticut (3-2): This is a completely different team with Cody Endres at Quarterback. Next Step…On the road at Rutgers.

5. Cincinnati (1-3): Coming off the bye, the Bearcats look to turn this season around. Next Step…Should-be win against Miami of Ohio.

6. Pittsburgh (2-3): Still looking for offensive balance, though the run game is taking off. Next Step…Off to South Bend to take on Notre Dame.

7. Rutgers (2-3): 77 points in four games? That is pathetic. Next Step…Hosting Connecticut.

8. Louisville (2-3): This team is actually playing fairly well. Next Step…Looking for back-to-back wins, hosting Memphis.

Big East Preview, Week 5

The conference failed once again to make a statement last week. And may not have another chance until bowl season. It’s now time for the Big East to stop the bleeding. It should start this weekend with games that are very winnable. To the picks…

Last Week: 6-1
Overall: 23-5

Bye: WVU, Cincinnati, Syracuse

Florida International at Pittsburgh: The Panthers were flat-out embarrassed last week at home. Tino Sunseri continues to struggle, and it’s killing the running game. Dion Lewis has to deal with seven or eight players in the box consistently, because opposing teams don’t have to respect the pass. Pitt’s defense isn’t anything to write home about either. Between injuries, arrests, and inexperience, the Panthers are genuinely lost. This week is huge for Pitt to turn it around…and turn it around fast. FIU comes to town, and is very beatable. The Golden Panthers are only averaging 20 points per-game, and were blown out by a fairly weak Maryland team just last week. Expect Pitt to get back to the short pass game. This should open Lewis and the ground game up. This, in effect, should open up the potential of the big-play pass that Pitt has been missing. Jon Baldwin is too good of a receiver not use constantly. If the Panthers get back to basics they’ll win easily.

Prediction: 38-21 Pittsburgh

Florida Atlantic at South Florida: Well, the Bulls continue to turn the ball over at will, and can’t score. Fortunately, the Bulls have a stingy defense (this seems to be a theme in the Big East.) South Florida now welcomes the Owls into Tampa for what should be a victory for Skip Holtz’ team. FAU is one-dimensional on offense, and has no defense. If the Bulls force the Owls into many 3rd and long situations FAU won’t put much on the board. This is also another week for the USF offense to potentially wake the hell up. The rushing game is there, but the passing game is unacceptable. BJ Daniels needs to be more of a leader out on the field. It may begin this weekend.

Prediction: 31-10 USF

Tulane at Rutgers: Just like USF or Pitt or UConn, Rutgers can’t get their act together offensively. The Knights blew numerous opportunities last week. Turning the ball over in the redzone equals losses…just ask WVU. Good news for Rutgers is that starting QB Tom Savage should be okay. However, that could be bad news. Savage hasn’t been impressive at all, though the Knight’s QB depth chart isn’t exactly solid. With the offense struggling mightily look for Rutgers’ defense to pace the team. The Knight’s D is second in the nation in points scored, and will put a hurting on the Green Wave. And just like USF, Pitt, and UConn the offense should be able to wake up a bit this week, as they take on an inferior opponent.

Prediction: 29-7 Rutgers

Louisville at Arkansas State: The Cardinals should be licking their collective chops. Louisville has an opportunity to go on the road, put up a big number, and pick up their first away victory since 2008. All Louisville has to do is play like they did two weeks ago at Oregon State. This means playing with confidence, mistake-free, and smart. They shouldn’t struggle on offense. Arkansas State has one of the worst defenses in all of FBS. If Louisville can hold onto the ball, and limit ASU’s big plays then it will be a victory. If they go in there, and find themselves down big early, then it will be a long day. Have some faith in Louisville this weekend.

Prediction: 34-28 Louisville

Game of the Week: Vanderbilt at Connecticut: The Huskies may actually have some hope. The passing offense seems to be back with Cody Endres taking over. Endres threw the ball well last week, and helped UConn wake up. The Huskies now take on a beatable SEC opponent, which could end up being the best non-conference win for the Big East. Vandy comes in with mixed results. The defense has been respectable, but the offense needs a boost. The good thing for the Commodores is that UConn struggles against the run. Look for Warren Norman to try to establish the ground game early. Vanderbilt doesn’t have much of a passing game, so expect a lot of slow drives. UConn should have more success in stopping that ground attack, considering they will stack the box. Look for UConn to get back to what many expected this year: a stout defense. This should be a close game, but look for the UConn defense to give plenty of opportunities for Endres and Company to get the job done.

Prediction: 28-20 Connecticut

1. West Virginia (3-1): Let down by the coaching staff once again, with another game on the line. Next Step…Bye Week

2. Syracuse (3-1): No offense to Syracuse, but they shouldn’t be number two in the Big East. Not yet. This league is down! Next Step…Bye Week

3. Cincinnati (1-3): They outplayed Oklahoma, but were let down by mistakes. The Bearcats could be back. Next Step…Bye Week

4. South Florida (2-1): Still under-performing under the Skip Holtz regime. Next Step…Hosting Florida Atlantic.

5. Rutgers (3-1): The defense continues to play well…the offense continues to struggle. Next Step…Hosting Tulane.

6. Connecticut (2-2): Cody Endres taking over at quarterback could be the boost the Huskies need to get back at it. Next Step…Hosting Vanderbilt.

7. Pittsburgh (1-2): Can the Panthers really be this bad? Can they stop getting arrested? Next Step…Hosting Florida International.

8. Louisville (1-2): The Cardinals are looking to build off their good performance at Oregon State. Next Step…A must win on the road at Arkansas State.

Big East Preview, Week 4

Potentially an explosive week for the Big East. Major match ups for the conference’s top teams. This is one of the last opportunities for this conference to step up to the plat and prove something. Or it could be another dismal weekend. On to the Picks!

Last Week: 3-2
Overall: 17-4

Bye: Louisville


Colgate at Syracuse: It’s not every year you have an FBS team face two-straight FCS squads. Well, Syracuse has pulled it off. In all reality Syracuse was forced to make a quick scheduling change due to a team dropping out. The change has brought Colgate to the Dome for a good beating. Expect Ryan Nassib to continue his solid QB play, and the Orange defense to continue to gain confidence.

Prediction: 45-7 Syracuse

Buffalo at Connecticut: The Huskies need to figure out how to pass the ball…and they need to figure it out quickly. Zach Fraiser may be in danger of losing his job if he comes out slow again; especially against a team he should deal with rather easily. The Bulls have had some good defensive success, but haven’t faced a tailback like Jordan Todman. The passing game should open up with Buffalo stacking the box. The Husky defense will handle Buffalo, so it’s completely up to the UConn offense to get the job done. Expect it to happen.

Prediction: 27-10 Connecticut

Western Kentucky at South Florida: The Bulls probably spent the bye week trying to figure out if there are actually receivers somewhere on campus. BJ Daniels desperately needs targets for this offense to balance out. South Florida has the running game, they seem to have the defense…the big question is the passing attack. This team can’t afford to be too one-dimensional. The good news for the Bulls is that this could be the week to open that passing game up. The Hilltoppers are allowing 50 points per-game, and will be in for a long game. The Bulls win this one easily.

Prediction: 35-13 South Florida

North Carolina at Rutgers: This is a huge game for Rutgers. The Knights get to face an opponent that has faced suspensions and two heart-breaking losses. However, it will be a great test, because the Tarheels have plenty of talent. UNC will still be missing key members due to Agent-Foolery. The defense hasn’t gelled, but the offense has exceeded expectations. Rutgers has to be ready for a balanced attacked. But most importantly, the Knights need to find an offense. Having the 113th best passing attack in the country won’t get it done. This is a true statement game for Rutgers. If they can’t score against this train-wreck of a defense then they won’t score on anyone. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt, and throw a little love the way of the Big East. The Knight’s defense gets it done, and the offense wakes up a little bit.

Prediction: 24-21 Rutgers

(8) Oklahoma at Cincinnati: Well…this looked like a good match-up a few weeks back…and then the season started. The Bearcats have been miserable in virtually every aspect of the game. The defense is brutal. The offensive line is garbage. The running game is non-existence. The coaching has been terrible. Having said all of that, do they have a chance to beat Oklahoma? Hell no. Landry Jones will throw for as many touchdowns as he wants. Butch Jones will not enjoy his Saturday.

Prediction: 42-21 Oklahoma

(19) Miami at Pittsburgh: The Panthers are looking for a spark. From injuries to ineffectiveness, and worst of all numerous arrests, this isn’t the start that Pittsburgh was looking for. However, it’s still a team that has plenty of talent. The defense will be tested by shear athleticism tonight as the Hurricanes come to play. The Hurricanes have spent the bye week trying to regroup following a dismal offensive performance at Ohio State. The Hurricanes should do well moving the ball. Pitt’s pass defense won’t be as solid without Greg Romeus, and this will exploit the young secondary. Dion Lewis should finally get things rolling. He’s too good to stay in the doldrums. But it won’t be enough. Just too much offensive speed for Miami in this contest.

Prediction: 31-27 Miami

Game of the Week: (22) West Virginia at (15) LSU: This is a winnable for the Mountaineers. Geno Smith and the West Virginia offense are incredibly tough to defend. You can shut down one receiver, but three others can burn you. You can shut down Noel Devine, but Ryan Clarke can run you over. It’s well balanced, and extremely athletic. However, the offensive line, while playing better last week, is still not up to par. The good thing for WVU is that LSU’s offense is completely imbalanced. Jordan Jefferson hasn’t gotten the passing game going, which is good for WVU. The weakest link right now for the Mountaineers is the secondary. It seems like a good match up for WVU. While they won’t put up a huge number due to the LSU defense, they should be able to do enough to stay in the game. Let’s be honest though, the biggest factor will be the crowd. LSU simply doesn’t lose at home on Saturday nights. A mistake late by the Mountaineers could be the difference. If this game was at a neutral field I would take the West Virginia.

Prediction: 28-24 LSU

Big East Preview, Week 3

Another dismal week for the Big East, with no statement wins. Once again, we have some opportunities for the conference to step up to the plate. Will we see a few hits? Or just more strikeouts? To the Picks!!!

Bye Week: Rutgers, Pittsburgh, South Florida

Maine at Syracuse: The Orange are coming off a frustrating game at Washington. It seemed to be a winnable game early, that straight got away from them. Syracuse now looks to rebound against a University of Maine team that is still looking for consistency. This should be a good match up for Syracuse. Maine is an FCS team, which has historically played FBS teams tough, and even had the lead against the Orange last year. However, it’s a team that Syracuse should handle easily. Look for Delone Carter to get on track. Last year, he tore the Black Bears up all night long. Ryan Nassib should also have plenty of success through the air, as long as the offensive line stands tall. Maine had to use plenty of trickeration last year to hang tough, expect Syracuse to be ready for it.

Prediction: 38-10 Syracuse

Louisville at (25) Oregon State: This will be a hard, road test for a Louisville team that just isn’t that competitive. The Beavers are faster, stronger, and simply much better. The Cardinals best hope is for Oregon State to be looking ahead to next week’s match up against Boise State. Louisville has run the ball well with Bilel Powell, but overall offensively still one-dimensional. This will be an issue against the Beavers, especially when they load the box. Jaquizz Rodgers will be the man for OSU. Louisville will struggle all night trying to slow one of college football’s most explosive players. The long, first year for Charlie Strong continues this weekend.

Prediction: 41-17 Oregon State

UConn at Temple: The Huskies travel to Philadelphia to take on the team they replaced in the Big East. This is also a battle of two great tailbacks. Jordan Todman got off and running for the Huskies last week after a slow start. Temple’s Bernard Pierce is still looking for a bust out game, which could happen this week. Connecticut has struggled against the run, but Temple isn’t as explosive as Michigan. The Huskies should be able to have success against this inconsistent Temple team. Meanwhile, UConn’s defense has a chance to make a bit of a statement. We have all expected more from the Huskies this year; this is a chance to prove it to us. Expect a close game, but too much Husky experience on both sides of the ball will be the difference.

Prediction: 24-14 UConn

Maryland at (21) West Virginia: Well, West Virginia is all over the place. The Mountaineers are lucky to have escaped Marshall with a win. Now coming to town is a new and improved Maryland team that is off to a 2-0 start. The Mountaineers should match up well. Look for WVU to stack the box and force Maryland to put the ball in the air. This is something the Terps have struggled with, even using two quarterbacks. Maryland needs to be balanced or WVU will eat up the offensive line. Meanwhile, the Mountaineer offense may have finally come out of their malaise late last game. However, this is still an offensive line that struggles. This should help Maryland stay in this game. Look for WVU to run many quick screens to open things up. Tavon Austin and Jock Sanders need many more touches, and the screen game is the way to go. At the end of the day, Maryland’s offensive game is not creative enough to win this game.

Prediction: 23-17 West Virginia

Game of the Week: Cincinnati at NC State: Tonight’s match up will give some bragging rights to the conference that wins. Bragging rights that are badly needed for two conferences mired in turmoil. The Bearcats finally woke up last week with a big second half. The Wolfpack has been inconsistent, but are 2-0. This is a battle of QB’s. Simply put, the QB who plays better will lead his team to victory. This means the pressure will certainly be put on NC State’s Russell Wilson. Why? The game is in Raleigh. This means Cincy needs to go all out. Expect an aggressive pass rush, and an open offensive playbook. If the Bearcats play not to win, they won’t. I still don’t believe we have seen Cincy’s best, which leads me to think it could be tonight. Look for the Bearcats to take advantage of Wilson and the Wolfpack’s mistakes. I’ll take the upset.

Prediction: 31-30 Cincinnati

Syracuse Q&A with Brian Harrison

UMAine faces Syracuse this week for the second time in as many years. The Orange are aiming for a bowl game this year, and are off to pretty good start. Brian Harrison from the great Syracuse blog Orange44 was nice enough to take some time to break down this confident Syracuse team.

1. What’s the overall feeling for the program this year?

It’s a lot of hope and optimism around this program right now. Marrone is a guy that is liked by almost everyone because he’s not only serious about bring success back to the program, and not only is improvement visible in every way, but he’s also one of us. He’s a Syracuse guy. He wants the program to succeed not only because his name is on the door, but because he understands what it means to Syracuse. And with a pretty reasonable schedule and a seemingly open Big East, people are thinking positively. I think, along with most people, Syracuse is just shy of a Bowl this season, but it will be on the horizon for the Orange in the next couple of seasons.


2. Offensive Style...Impact Offensive Players

It’s Delone Carter to start. He’s a power runner than will not shy away from contact and has the ability to find seams and run through them. Carter can break tackles and push people around. Last year against Maine is only ran for 72 yards, but he had 4 total touchdowns. Look for him to be the guy that punches in a score in the red zone, or catches a pass in the flat to muscle it in.

3. Cincinnati (1-1): Looked pitiful again in the first half, but came on to beat up on an FCS opponent. Next Step…Statement game Thursday night at NC State

4. Connecticut (1-1): Back on track after beating down Texas Southern. Next Step…Down to Philly to take on Temple.

5. South Florida (1-1): Too many mistakes offensively cost the Bulls a chance at beating Florida. Next Step…Bye Week

6. Syracuse (1-1): Disappointing second half at Washington, in a game which started perfectly for the Orange. Next Step…Hosting Umaine.

7. Rutgers (2-0): Unimpressive again in a win over FIU. The offense is MIA. Next Step…Bye Week

Big East, Vacation Week Picks

Listen, I’m on vacation so here is the abbreviated version of Big East picks. Enjoy the holiday weekend.

Last Week: 1-2
Overall: 49-11

Rutgers at Louisville: Expect the Knights to turn around this week, following the ugly loss to Syracuse. The Cards have been playing better, and will keep this one close. However, just too much pressure from Rutgers offensively for Louisville to keep it close.

Prediction: 28-17

Syracuse at Connecticut: The Orange were fantastic last weekend against Rutgers. Syracuse will have to be even better this time around for any chance to beat a determined UConn team. The Huskies need one win to become bowl eligible, and if the defense shows up it will happen this weekend. Connecticut should control the clock with the running game, and take down a beat-up ‘Cuse squad.

Prediction: 31-21 Connecticut

Illinois at (5) Cincinnati: Some say this is a trap game. I don’t buy it. Juice Williams can certainly be a threat, but the Illinois defense will struggle quite a bit against the potent Cincinnati attack. With Tony Pike back, the Bearcats will be hitting on all cylinders. Cincinnati will go into the Pitt game with an undefeated record.

Prediction: 34-17 Cincinnati

(17) Miami at South Florida: Hilarity will once again ensue for the Bulls, easily the most inconsistent team in the conference. There is truly no predicting how this team will play week-to-week. Considering this is a rivalry game I’ll give the nod to the home team. And USF is normally very solid against instate opponents. Expect a close game, with the Bulls’ defense being the difference.

Prediction: 24-20 South Florida

Game of the Week: (9) Pittsburgh at West Virginia: It’s Backyard Brawl time once again. The Panthers are looking to stay in the BCS hunt, while West Virginia looks for a signature win. It won’t happen here. The Panthers should have a lot of success offensively. Look for Bill Stull to have fantastic passing numbers against a brutal Mountaineer secondary. The pass could set up the run as well, which means a potential huge day for Dion Lewis. It’s senior day for WVU and a rivalry game so it could be close. But, the Mountaineers are just not at Pitt’s level.

Prediction: 27-21 Pitt

Big Eat Preview, Week 11

It’s judgment week for the Big East, with many important matchups. Can South Florida win late in the season? Can Cincinnati hold off the pressure? Can Louisville or Syracuse actually win a conference game? Can Pitt avoid a major trap game? Stay tuned…all of these questions will be answered over the next few days. On to the picks…

(24) South Florida at Rutgers: This is a crucial Big East matchup. USF is out to finish a season strong. The Bulls can win out if they play up to potential. Meanwhile, the Knights are still looking for a marquee win this season. This could be Rutgers’ best shot. It has the makings of a close game. The Bulls may be back on track after dismantling West Virginia. B.J. Daniels continues to mature, and seems to have regained his confidence. If the Bulls play a disciplined game expect a win. It’s just hard to guarantee a disciplined performance considering it has barely happened this season. Look for a close game early, with Rutgers’ defense being the difference. However, that defense can’t play at a high level for very long. South Florida will take control in the second half, and rely on the defense to bring it home.


Prediction: 24-19 South Florida


(25) West Virginia at (5) Cincinnati: The Bearcats got a major scare last week, and now host a West Virginia team that can be dangerous. Is Cincinnati starting to feel the pressure? Or was the UConn game just a near speed bump? The Bearcats are a better all-around team on paper than WVU, and should win this game handily. Zach Collaros once again will get the start for Cincy. The backup has been remarkably effective. Tony Pike is also back, and should get some snaps. The receivers, led by Mardy Gilyard should have a huge game. The Mountaineer secondary continues to get worse as the year progresses. WVU needs to establish a ground game. Noel Devine has been slowed the last few weeks, and Jarrett Brown continues to make mistakes. If WVU can’t control the ball this game is a blowout. I just don’t see the Mountaineers controlling anything.


Prediction: 34-17 Cincinnati


Syracuse at Louisville: It’s the battle of the beaten’s this week in Louisville. The Cardinals and the Orange are both looking for that first conference win of the season. The Orange continue to be depleted by injury, especially defensively. Syracuse also struggled in stopping the run last week for the first time this season. That’s not a good sign moving forward, considering the Orange secondary is downright tragic. However, Louisville can’t throw the football, so the ‘Cuse can afford to stack the box. The Cards defense really stepped up last week, and should cut Delone Carter and the Orange run game down. Greg Paulus and Ryan Nassib are going to have to win this game. It’s hard to see that happening. An early turnover or two will be the downfall for the Orange.


Prediction: 20-12 Louisville


Game of the Week: Notre Dame at (12) Pittsburgh: No time for a letdown now for Pittsburgh. The Panthers have an opportunity to not only win the conference, but finish as a top five pick. A loss to Notre Dame would take a lot of luster off this season. The Irish are limping, following a loss to Navy. Defensively, Notre Dame is a train wreck, and could be in for a long day. However, the Irish attack is still very dangerous. Jimmy Clausen continues to have an outstanding year, with 20 touchdowns, and just three picks. Not to be outdone is Bill Stull, who is right behind Clausen in efficiency. Both QB’s should have more success this week. Also expect both running games to get going early. This game will be a true shootout. Pitt wants to keep the Notre Dame offense off the field as much as possible. The Panthers should be able to do this with Dion Lewis. Lewis should have a big day. The Irish will score, but Pitt should have enough to keep control through the game.

Big East Power Rankings, Week 3

1. Cincinnati (2-0, 1-0): The class of the conference continues to roll early. Next Step…A statement game at Oregon State

2. Pittsburgh (2-0, 0-0): A textbook weekend win over Buffalo was unfortunately overshadowed by injuries. Next Step…Stopping the Navy rushing attack.

3. West Virginia (2-0, 0-0): Sweet revenge against ECU has the Mountaineers flying high. Next Step…Not letting Auburn gain sweet revenge this weekend.

4. South Florida (2-0, 0-0): The easy, early schedule has been no problem for the Bulls. Next Step…another laugher, this time against Charleston Southern.

5. UConn (1-1, 0-0): Terrible weekend for the Huskies, losing on a safety, and losing the starting QB. Next Step…On the road against a tough Baylor team.

6. Rutgers (1-1, 0-0): A nice bounce-back weekend for the dark horse of the conference. Next Step…hosting FIU

7. Syracuse (0-2, 0-0): This team is ready to start winning some football games. Next Step…a winnable game against Northwestern

8. Louisville (1-0, 0-0): They may have a better record than Syracuse, but haven’t impressed yet. Next Step…a tough rivalry game against Kentucky

Big East Preview, Week 2

The season is off and running with few surprises so far. The Big East is finally represented in the top 25 with Cincinnati, and others may join the Bearcats soon. This week is highlighted by an important ACC/ Big East showdown. He are the picks.

Bye: Louisville

Howard at Rutgers: Well, the Knights are not exactly off to the best start. However, this should be a bounce-back weekend against mighty Howard. Rutgers has plenty of issues to work on, and expect four quarters of work, while never worrying about actually losing. Domenic Natale was downright brutal, and makes one wonder if Tom Savage is now the starting quarterback for the Knights. But Rutgers also needs to find some intensity, a consistent defense, an offensive line that doesn't resemble Swiss cheese...like I said a lot of issues. Too bad the Bison didn't start the season in Jersey...they may have beaten that Rutgers team. That will not be the case this weekend.

Prediction: 34-10 Rutgers

Southeast Missouri State at (23) Cincinnati: Both teams come in off of major blowouts. However, only one of them was a blowout against an FBS opponent. Actually...only one of them was against an NCAA opponent. Newly ranked Cincinnati sent a message Monday by hammering Rutgers in Jersey. The Bearcats already look to have the most dynamic offense in the conference…and defensively, so far so good. The ‘Cats managed to keep Rutgers under 300 yards of total offense, and ended up with three interceptions. Are we talking trap game this week with the monster win over Rutgers, and a feeble opponent coming in? Um...no. The Redhawks did win 72-3 last week...however it was against NAIA foe Quincy. Expect a thrashing.

Prediction: 56-10 Cincinnati

South Florida at Western Kentucky: The Bulls were pretty solid in week one. WKU was hideous. The Hilltoppers managed just 83 total yards against Tennessee. Not good considering South Florida brings a solid defense to the table. The Bulls shutdown Wofford in week one...limiting the Terriers to just 211 total yards. Matt Grothe will once again lead the Bulls offense through the air and on the ground...especially with the suspension to starting tailback Mike Ford. Grothe should have quite a bit of success doing both against a very shaky WKU defense. This game should be over early.

Prediction: 42-9 South Florida

Pittsburgh at Buffalo: When first looking at this matchup one would think it's one-sided. However, looking at how Buffalo has been playing over the last year (as well of the fact that Pitt nearly lost to the Bulls at home last year) this could be a solid football game. Buffalo had a decent road win at UTEP to kick off the year. Meanwhile, Pitt knocked the dust off with a drubbing of Youngstown State. Panther frosh tailback, Dion Lewis was electric in his debut...going for over 120 yards with three total touchdowns. The Bulls will have to slow Lewis down to stay in the game. Expect Pitt's defense to overpower the Buffalo line, and put tons of pressure on Zach Maynard. This game may be close early, but the Panthers will be too balanced for Buffalo to keep up.

Prediction: 29-14 Pitt

Syracuse at (7) Penn State: The Gophers were who Cuse thought they were...and they let them off the hook (slams table and leaves...) Greg Paulus and company had them. They were decent enough on both sides of the ball to bring it home...and also make me look like a genius for picking it...but it was mistakes in the end that killed them. However, a mistake is much better than an ineffective ball club, and the Orange were not ineffective. They will be this week though. Penn State will kill them.

Prediction: 45-10 Penn State

East Carolina at West Virginia: This is a revenge game for the Mountaineers after getting embarrassed by the Pirates last year. Patrick Pinkney and ECU owned West Virginia last year, and look to do it again with an experienced and balanced attack. However, the Pirates have to remember that a college football game is 60 mins, not 30...after nearly blowing a large lead against FCS opponent and noted FBS killer Appalachian State. Too many mistakes nearly led to a monster upset. The Mountaineers slept walk through a win against Liberty. Nothing was too impressive throughout the entire game, with the exception of new kicker Tyler Bitancurt, who was 4-4 for field goals. Field goals aren't enough against ECU, who will have some success against the inconsistent West Virginia defense. Expect more intensity out of WVU this weekend, as they look for sweet revenge. The Mountaineers should take control in the second to remain undefeated in the young season.

Prediction: 31-21 West Virginia

Game of the Week: (19) North Carolina at UConn: This is a very important game for the conference. The Huskies have an opportunity to take down a pretty good ACC team. If UConn wins, expect Carolina to drop from the polls…which could get another Big East team in. It should be a good battle, with both teams looking to establish the ground game early. North Carolina’s Shaun Draughn and UConn’s Jordan Toddman were the stars for their respective teams in week one. However, the Huskies were far from dominant against a weak opponent in Ohio. If UConn is looking to make a statement, it starts with Toddman and ends with a young defense stepping up. However, the experienced ‘Heel offense should have success. The Huskies will have a good team this year, just not good enough to deal with Carolina.

Prediction: 24-19 North Carolina

NCAA Tournament...Big East Sweet 16 Preview

A good tourney so far for the Big East. The conference has proven that it is the best in the nation by still having five teams in the tourney. It is the first time that a single conference sends five teams to the Sweet 16. Having five team left keeps the possibility open for a complete Big East Final Four. The picks...

Thursday
(5) Purdue vs. (1) UConn: The Huskies have been the most dominant team in the tourney so far. It helps to be playing with a chip on the ole shoulder. The ailing Jim Calhoun seems to have sold the disrespect card to his boys…and now they are taking it out on anyone who is in the way. Purdue has played well, but won’t handle the physicality that UConn will throw. Expect the Huskies to push the ball inside and take control early.

Prediction: 76-63 UConn

(3) Villanova vs. (2) Duke: It should be one of the better games of the round. Both teams have great guards, sharp shooting, and pretty solid defense. Nova desperately needs to come out strong. Jay Wright can ill-afford to get into a coaching battle. If so, Coach K will bury him in two seconds. The Wildcats will try to insert a more physical game. Duke does have a history of backing down to stronger teams. Once again Dante Cunningham could be the difference. Duke can’t match his game. If it’s close give Duke the advantage. I just don’t see it being close enough.

Prediction: 70-63 Villanova

(4) Xavier vs. (1) Pitt: Coach Miller gets to take on the team that he used to lead on the court. Now they stand between him and back-to-back Elite Eights for his Musketeers. There is no question Pitt has struggled, but maybe the break is what the Panthers needed. Sam Young is also playing at top form, which doesn’t bode well for Xavier. What does bode well for Xavier is the fact that Pitt hasn’t been to the Elite Eight in quite some time. The Panthers always find ways to lose. I’m sticking to my bracket, and going with the Musketeers…tournament experience and better form being the difference.

Prediction: 63-61 Xavier

(3) Syracuse vs. (2) Oklahoma: Here’s a straight battle for you all. Syracuse will bring the tough zone and athletic transition game. The Orange has been pretty solid so far, though have struggled to finish games out. The Cuse won’t get away with it against a team as solid as Oklahoma. Blake Griffin seems to be back up to form...and the boys have been shooting well from the outside. This will be a close one. Expect Oklahoma to attack the zone with Griffin, then kicking it out for open looks. The Cuse will look to exploit all turnovers and missed shots with the transition game. These two teams will be spent when it’s all over. And when it is finally through, expect the never-say-die Orange to be moving on.

Prediction: 85-80 Syracuse

(12) Arizona vs. (1) Louisville: The Cardinals were a tad lucky to escape the second round. Now Louisville takes on an Arizona team that is much better than the 12-seed it has. Each squad has numerous NBA prospects and fine role-players. The difference may simply be that the Cardinals have more. Louisville doesn’t normally blow teams out. Instead, the Cards slowly dismantle the opponent with great defense and colossal depth. The Wildcats are on a nice run, but the finish line will not be reached. Too much depth for Louisville.

Prediction: 71-58 Louisville

NCAA Tournament...Big East Games Second Round Preview

It was a solid opening round for the Big East, losing just one team (West Virginia) out of the seven. However, there was plenty of drama, including Pitt nearly losing to a 16-seed. And more drama should be on the way with some great second round tilts. Picks, picks, and more picks…

First Round: 6-1

Saturday

(6) UCLA vs. (3) Villanova: Each team was in a dogfight in the first round…now which still has the legs to get the upper hand? It will be a battle of guards, and outside shooting early, as both squads look to set the tempo. Look for Dante Cunningham to take control of this game in the second half, as Nova pulls away with better ball movement, and more assertiveness. Don’t forget…it’s also a “home game” or Nova.

Prediction: 70-64 Villanova

(9) Texas A+M vs. (1) UConn: The Huskies seemed to be okay even with Jim Calhoun watching the game from the hospital. UConn treated a 16^th seed like it should. Meanwhile, the Aggies controlled BYU for 40 straight minutes, making the win look easy. Now for the tough task….trying to slow the Huskies down. A+M doesn’t have the size and strength to cut UConn down low…and just aren’t a strong enough team for the outside. Expect UConn to pull breeze in the second half.

Prediction: 78-65 UConn

Sunday

(6) Arizona State vs. (3) Syracuse: The Sundevils are in for a rude awakening. Syracuse is one of the hottest teams in America and didn’t break a sweat in the first round. ASU has to find a way to slow the Orange down or the Devils will be run out of the gym. Motion vs. a 2-3 zone is always fun to watch, and it could help ASU control the tempo. However, too many missed shots will turn the Orange loose.

Prediction: 81-75 Syracuse

(8) Oklahoma State vs. (1) Pittsburgh: Will nearly losing to a 16-seed be the best or worst thing to happen to Pitt? Will they come out with fire and raw emotion…and absolutely blast the Cowboys away? Or will they be flat and complacent…and have to dig deep to get out of the second round? Take the former on this one. Pitt will had its scare, and now it’s back to playing top-notch.

Prediction: 74-66 Pitt

(6) Marquette vs. (3) Missouri: The Eagles should be happy just to be in the second round, after nearly giving it away to Utah Sate. And now a battle with Mizzou sands in the way of a Sweet-16 birth. The Tigers handled Cornell well and should do the same with a Dominic James-less Marquette squad. The point guard will be missed, a the Eagles won’t be able to answer a Missouri run.

Prediction: 75-65 Missouri

(9) Sienna vs. (1) Louisville: Sienna will have some tired legs after a double-overtime thriller against Ohio State. That doesn’t bode well when the next opponent is solid and extremely deep. The Cardinals full-court press, inside-outside game, and adequate bench will be too much for the young Saints.

Prediction: 78-59 Louisville

NCAA Tournament...Big East Games First Round Preview

NCAA tourney time for seven of the Big East’s finest. And what a tournament it may turn out to be for the conference. The first round is looking very promising for the magnificent seven, as the Big East looks to own the dance. So…let’s get right to it. The first round picks…

MIDWEST

(1) Louisville vs. (16) Morehead State: I refuse to breakdown 1-16 games. Not until a 16 seed wins one.

Prediction: 81-58 Louisville

(6) West Virginia vs. (11) Dayton: This will be a closer game than people may expect. Both teams play good defense, and both have some playmakers. The Mountaineers have had their struggles against the zone, but Dayton normally rolls in man defense. This could be the difference, with West Virginia getting too many easy looks.

Prediction: 73-65 West Virginia

WEST

(1) UConn vs. (16) Chattanooga: See above

Prediction: 85-60

(6) Marquette vs. (11) Utah State: The Golden Eagles will not have a long run in this year’s tourney. The injury to Dominic James will spell an early-exit…but not this early. Marquette will use their athleticism and Big East toughness to punish the Aggies.

Prediction: 78-64 Marquette

(1) Pittsburgh vs. (16) ETSU: See above

Prediction: 89-55 Pitt

(3) Villanova vs. (14) American: The ‘Cats have an outstanding bracket. They match-up well against many of the teams, and beat the one-seed (Pitt) earlier this season. It starts with a game against American. Nova’s guard play should bury American early, and coast from there.

Prediction: 78-58 Villanova

SOUTH

(4) Syracuse vs. (13) Stephen F. Austin: My man Stephen is in trouble. The Orange is one of the hottest teams in America right now, and continues to improve. The zone will confuse my man Stephen, forcing many turnovers, which will then setup the transition. Expect Syracuse to get up early and cruise to victory.
