Baseball: Hartford downs Maine

The University of Maine baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision to Hartford on Sunday afternoon in the third and final game of its weekend series. Joey Martin (Portland, Maine) belted a home run for the Black Bears in the game. Maine falls to 12-20 on the season with the loss and 3-4 in America East play. Hartford improves to 3-25-1 on the season and 1-5 in conference play.

Maine jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Martin homered to right field. It was the second home run of the season for Martin.

Hartford took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Simon Kudernatsch tripled to right center field and Ryan Lukach followed and drew a walked. Both runners scored when Chris Suchy doubled to left center.

The Hawks added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kudernatsch belted his second triple of the game and scored when Lukach hit a sacrifice fly. Hartford made it a 4-1 final with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Alex Bulger reached and advanced to second on an error. He scored when Victor Santana singled up the middle.

A.J. Bazdanes (Nashua, N.H.) started the game on the mound for the Black Bears. He allowed three runs on four hits over six innings while striking out six. He falls to 1-4 on the season. Stephen Perakslis (Abington, Mass.) pitched the final two innings for Maine. He allowed one run on a pair of hits.

Anthony Mannuccia pitched the complete game for Hartford. He allowed just one run on eight hits while striking out four. He improves to 2-4 on the season.

The Black Bears return to action on Tuesday, April 19 when they host Colby at 5 PM.

Chandler Jones, a defensive end for Syracuse, joined the PM Jab this afternoon in advance of Saturday's match-up with UMaine.

Monday Weekend Wrap-Up

• The Black Bears had a great weekend on the hardwood. On Saturday the men knocked off Boston College 52-51 and improved to 7-5 on the season. The women, not to be outdone, knocked off UMass 65-49 on Sunday afternoon.
• Jhonas Enroth made 39 saves for the Pirates and shut-out Providence.
  
• Jason Bay apparently agreed to his deal with the Mets on Christmas. His physical with the Mets is today.
• The Patriots lost Wes Welker for a very long time with an acl/mcl tear early, played good for three quarters on the road against a good Texans team, then fell apart in the fourth quarter. They finish the year 10-6 and will play the Ravens Sunday at 1.
• The Bruins agreed to a deal with veteran Miroslav Satan, and Milan Lucic is practicing again.
• The Maine Red Claws are out in Boise for the D-League showcase.
• The great Mike Emrick joined Jeff and myself to recap the Winter Classic this weekend.

• The Red Sox continued their mastery of the Orioles with a 10-0 ass-kicking last night.

Comcast to Televise Three UMaine Games in 2009

UMaine has announced that Comcast SportsNet will carry three Black Bear football games in the 2009 season. CSN will carry two home games, starting with the Oct. 17th tile against defending National Champion Richmond. The kick will be at 12:00. It will also air the UMass contest on Halloween, which is a 3:30 start time. UMaine's Nov. 21st matchup on the road against rival UNH will also be seen on CSN...kickoff at 12pm.

UMaine also released start times for two other games. The Black Bears' Sept. 3rd Thursday night season opener against St. Cloud State will begin at 7pm. And the home finale against URI will be a noon kick.

I interviewed former Windham High School standout and current UMaine Black Bear defensive tackle Raibonne Charles on the Sports Vortex earlier this week (the feature piece I wrote will be in the Windham Independent this week, and I might even post it on here). We talked about red-shirting, the difference between high school and college, and the challenges of being a student-athlete.
